Volleyball Sweeps Fordham 3-0

The Dukes' volleyball team ended its 2002 regular season with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-20, 30-23) sweep over visiting Fordham Saturday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Sophomore Ashley Macko led the match with 11 kills while junior Sarah Morrow posted a match-best 14 digs and eight blocks.
Fordham was led by Roxanne Hill with 10 kills.
The Dukes took an early 9-3 lead in game one, but saw the Rams inch their way to within an 8-10 reach of the lead. The Dukes extended the margin to 13-9 and 19-12 and would not let Fordham within a 16-21 reach thereafter. The Red & Blue served for six straight points for a 28-16 edge to secure the win.
Duquesne opened game two with a 5-0 start and never looked back capturing a 30-20 advantage.
Fordham came on solid in game three with a 6-0 lead and extended that margin to a 10-2 edge. Duquesne got with in an 11-14 reach on back-to-back aces from Cristy Gustas and tied the game at 15-15 out-scoring the Rams 4-1. DU took its first lead o the game on a kill from Diana Wuebker for an 18-17 edge before Fordham tied the contest at 18-all. The Dukes then went up 22-18 and held at least a two-point edge from then on.
The Dukes conclude the season 18-12 overall, 7-7 in the Atlantic play. Their 18 wins mark the most since the 1996 slate when the squad was 18-13 overall.
